For centuries, black women have always been very protective & creative with their hair. Growing up, having a sew in with leave out was the go to hairstyle amongst women of color along with breadsone of the popular hairstyles that I wanted to get was a "sew in with leave out". This style involves leaving some of your natural hair out while wearing extensions or weaves.
