Met Gala 2021: The Wow's and Disappointments of This Year's "In America: An Anthology of Fashion"

After the cancellation of last year's Met Gala 2020 due to the unfortunate Covid-19 pandemic, many in the fashion world were anxiously looking forward to finally being able to participate in the most coveted night of the year for celebrities and fashion designers. The theme to this year's Met Gala 2021, the annual fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, was "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" a celebration of "American Independence" with designs made in the US.

Both of these looks are what I would expect from both Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, but in my opinion, their looks didn't quite honor the theme (as most of the attendees this year). Nevertheless, Rihanna's glam didn't disappoint as she could have honestly worn a trash bag and would look just as beautiful. A$AP Rocky, in my opinion, looked like he grabbed the nearest throw cover from the couch and headed out the door (shrugs).

Normani looked like a Disney Princess as she arrived in a chartreuse ball gown by Valentino with oversized puffy sleeves, a tightly cinched waist, and a low-cut neckline. I loved that her hair was pulled back away from her face to accentuate the diamond and sapphire necklace. She looked absolutely stunning but, because she has such a petite frame, I felt that this overbearing style of dress wore her instead of her wearing the dress.

Pharell and his wife Helen wore a matching black leather cowboy shirt and pants with white trim designed by the late and great Karl Lagerfeld. They both topped off the Wild West look with matching black cowboy boots with gold toe detail. Knowing their close relationship, it was a no-brainer that Pharell would be wearing Chanel for tonight's event.

Kendall Jenner in Givenchy was definitely one of my favorite looks of the night. She gave me "Old Hollywood Glam" with a sheer nude-toned rhinestone-encrusted dress that framed her shape perfectly. She was definitely in my top three favorites.

Her sister, Kim Kardashian West, was ironically in my opinion one of the WORST dressed for the night. She wore a custom-made Balenciaga floor-length tunic with a matching bodysuit, elbow-length gloves, leggings with built-in boots, and a full head mask. I understand the concept of pushing the envelope at the Met Gala to express creativity and originality. But for the last several weeks in conjunction with her husband Kanye West's "Donda" album release, she's done this "look" several times and honestly, at this point it's overkill.

I absolutely LOVE TT!! She's a beautiful young woman with an AMAZING body. There is no question of how beautiful she is in this dress. I just feel like this is the same look she goes for all time.

As soon as I saw this photo, I could NOT believe this was Jennifer Lopez. The accessories to this ensemble were just a NO, NO, NO, and NOOOO. She obliged with the theme of the evening by wearing Ralph Lauren in a long-sleeve brown gown with a low-cut neckline which I actually thought was beautiful. I just don't understand why her team chose the need to OVER accessorize this gown with a wide-brimmed black cowboy hat, extra-large hoop earrings, a wide brown choker, a large silver necklace, a brown leather belt, AND a feather bolero jacket. I'll add that all of those accessories mentioned were from the waist up.

Mary J Blige was sheer perfection in this gold floor-length long sleeve gown with a deep plunging neckline and rhinestone detail. She paired this stunning gown with gold metallic gold Casadei heels. The fact that she was styled by Jason Rembert, (whom I know personally) had absolutely nothing to do with my thoughts on her look. (BTW, Jason also dressed Lil Baby in Coach, Ben Platt in custom Christian Cowan, Shai in Tom Ford, and Rita Ora in Prada for tonights event!) :-)

Lil Naz X displayed a three-part Atelier Versace outfit that he revealed all at one time. The first look was a grand high collared cape with a floor-length sweeping train with beaded detail trim. The second look seemed to be an exact replication of the gold armored suit worn by the Star Wars character C3PO. Then finally, the recording artist stripped down to reveal a third look in what appeared to be a gold and black metal-like bodysuit topped off with ankle-high black Versace boots. I lived for every single moment.

I saved my absolute favorite ICONIC look of the night for last. IMAN was jaw-droppingly STUNNING in this custom bustier and matching wide-legged pants created by Dolce & Gabbana and British- American designer Harris Reid. It was paired with a gold and silver feathered covered cage overskirt along with a spectacular and GRAND matching feather headpiece. IMAN, in my opinion, was THE BEST DRESSED of the night.

Overall, this year's MET GALA was not impressive at all compared to previous years. I'm looking forward to part two which will be open for display on May 2, 2022. The American fashion exhibit is entitled, "An American Anthology of Fashion". The museum will be working with "American film directors to create cinematic scenes within each room that depicts a different history of American fashion" will be open to the public until September 2022.
